Manchester Students Celebrate Electoral Success!

Student Union elections for both the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan
University student unions were held at the beginning of March to elect the new Executive to run
the Unions for the next academic year. At MMU, Young Green Tom Redford was elected to a non
sabbatical position as Officer without portfolio. Tom ran with a group of others students who
campaigned together and helped each other out, urging people to vote for all of them in different
positions. This was called the 'Students First' block, and focused on student issues and the
environment around campus and beyond.

At Manchester, Young Green Dan Lee was elected as the Campaigns Officer, a sabbatical position on
the Union Executive. Dan ran as a Green Independent, and beat the Communist and Respect
candidates. Young Green Andrew Speke was elected as the Environment and Ethics secretary, a
position on the student council. Andrew was the only visible candidate for this election, and
through hard campaigning beat the 3 other candidates.

The next academic year now gives Young Greens in Manchester plenty of opportunities for improving
the environmental and green credentials of the universities, as well as educating students about
the Green Party and what we stand for.

The Manchester Young Greens have a large presence throughout this active Green city. At Manchester University, nearly 200 students signed up at the Freshers' Fair, making the Manchester University Young Greens the largest Young Greens university group in the country! Manchester's Young Greens have been involved in numerous campaigns, canvassings and elections.
