The Young Greens today backed calls for a national demonstration to be organised by the National Union of Students. The Young Greens join a growing number of bodies that have been pushing for the NUS to hold a demonstration in Autumn 2012, including the NUS Women's Campaign and the NUS LGBT Campaign, as well as over 100 independent activists[1].
Sam Coates, Co-chair of the Young Greens, said:
“It is vital that a demonstration lead by the NUS takes place in the Autumn to fight back against the Coalition's plans to wreck further and higher education. If a demonstration takes place, the momentum gained from grassroots activism across the country can be harnessed to show the Government that students are not going to stand back while access to education is curtailed.”
Young Greens who will be attending the NUS National Conference in April[2] have also spoken out in favour of holding a demonstration. Georgina Bavetta, the Young Green's candidate for the NEC 'Block of 15' elections[3], said:
“I and the rest of the Young Greens attending the conference will be supporting the motion to hold a first term demonstration at the NUS National Conference, and would encourage any delegates who want the NUS to be a campaigning union to vote in favour of it too. We were promised one last year, but it wasn't delivered. This year we need to make sure it goes ahead.”
