The Young Greens of England and Wales are greatly disturbed over the arrest of a student and member of staff at Nottingham University. The arrests occurred after a masters student, Rizwaan Sabir, researching terrorist tactics emailed a copy of an edited Al-Qaida training manual to Hisham Yezza, an administrator at the University, to print out. The training manual is available to download from US government websites which are listed on departmental reading lists. The University called the police who subsequently arrested both men and held them for six days without charge.

Andy Birkby, Young Greens Male Co-Chair, said, "not only will this lead to a climate of fear on university campuses, the actions of the University and the police is a direct attack on academic freedoms. As a graduate of Nottingham University, I am appalled at the the way the University has handled the situation and its failure to speak out and protect academic freedom."

This incident highlights the need for to resist the Government's plans to extend detention without charge even further. Pre-charge detention can not be justified.
