ECOSOCIALISM AND THE RED-GREEN REVOLUTION

PROF. JOEL KOVEL TO GIVE A TALK ON ECO-SOCIALISM AT LSE CHAIRED BY DR. DEREK WALL

VENUE: Room G108, 20 Kingsway Building ('G' Building), Portugal Street (Opposite Peacock Theatre), LSE Campus

DATE AND TIME: Friday May 4th 2007, 6-8pm

Prof. Joel Kovel, Jewish American political activist and respected academic in psychoanalysis and the social sciences, will give a talk at the London School of Economics (LSE) on Friday May 4th 2007 at 6pm about Eco-socialism and his new book, 'Overcoming Zionism'.

In an event chaired by Dr. Derek Wall, Visiting Lecturer at Goldsmiths College and Male Principal Speaker of the Green Party of England and Wales, that Prof. Kovel has detailed thoroughly in his acclaimed book 'The Enemy of Prof. Kovel will discuss the latest developments in Eco-socialism, an idea Nature: The End of Capitalism or the End of the World?'. Eco-socialism sees capitalism as the cause of ecological destruction and social injustice, and Kovel advocates a complete restructuring of society to move towards a world based on sustainability, equality, peace and participatory democracy.

Prof. Kovel is currently Distinguished Professor of Social Studies at Bard College. He was a candidate against Ralph Nader for the Green Party of the US nomination for US President in 2000. He has written award-winning books on psychiatry and psychoanalysis, including 'The Radical Spirit: Essays on Psychoanalysis and Society', winner of the 1989 Choice Outstanding Academic Book, and 'White Racism: A Psychohistory', which was nominated for a National Book Award in Religion and Philosophy. His work on politics and Eco-socialism includes the critically-acclaimed 'Enemy of Nature: The End of Capitalism or The End of the World?'. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Eco-socialist journal 'Capitalism Nature Socialism'. Kovel is also involved
in peace campaigns, Central American solidarity movements and the movements for democratic media. His latest book, 'Overcoming Zionism', argues for a secular, single-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict and, in the view of Michel Warschawski, former Director of the Alternative Information Centre in Jerusalem, shows a "very deep feeling of empathy and solidarity with his fellow-Jews caught in the death-trap of the Zionist adventure"[1].

14th November 2006: Living Wage Demonstration at LSE

Since last year, LSE students of varying progressive political shades have united to lobby the school to introduce a Living Wage of £7.05 an hour for all its cleaners, the Living Wage set by the GLA - currently, many of the cleaning contractors only pay the cleaners the minimum wage, and a 'dossier' of evidence has been compiled by campaigners detailing a record of short pay and a history of other breaches of workers' rights, such as withholding holiday pay. The LSE Living Wage Campaign has been assisted by London Citizens, a group of community organisations that has campaigned across London for a Living Wage - and an organisation that has been successful at numerous banks and hotels, as well as Queen Mary's University.

Campaigners from London Citizens have said to me that the most important and influential help they have received from politicians has been from Jenny and Darren on the GLA - they are thrilled to have the Greens on board as their most vocal supporters. In this spirit, I am inviting you all to attend a protest at the Old Building of LSE (on Houghton Street, just off the Aldwych and Kingsway) on Tuesday 14th November from around 12.45pm. The protest is designed to coincide with a meeting of the LSE Academic Planning and Resources Committee (APRC), which will discuss a motion on the Living Wage. Howard Davies, LSE's Director, has agreed to a 'pre-meeting' with campaigners at 1pm, after which the APRC will meet at 2pm to discuss the issue formally.

This action is seen as the pinnacle of the long months of campaigning: we may come out of it with a Living Wage! The continued support of prominent members of the Green Party would be a massive boost to the campaign. Please reply with your thoughts on this, and forward this on to any other people who might be interested.

Many thanks,

Aled Dilwyn Fisher

Another successful Freshers Fair for the Greens at LSE - Autumn 2006

"The LSESU Greens were placed in the same room as all the other parties - but that didn't stop us from becoming LSE's biggest political party (again)! People were really enthusiastic about the Green message and getting involved. The Tories, Labour and Lib Dems trailed in our wake! Big thanks to James, Jeff, Rob and Louise, who all helped out on the stall!"

'Concern over the Appointment of Sir Peter Sutherland at the LSE' Campaign Begins - with LSESU Greens at Forefront

The 'Concern over the Appointment of Sir Peter Sutherland at the LSE' Campaign has been launched by students at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).

Sir Peter Sutherland is the Chairman of British Petroleum (BP). BP have a storied history of alleged environmental and social crimes. Documented cases can be seen at http://www.bakuceyhan.org.uk/about.htm, http://www.foe.org.uk/campaigns/corporates/case_studies/bp/index.html and https://www.rigzone.com/news/article.asp?a_id=30206. His appointment has aroused a number of disapproving voices from the student body.

A campaign around the issue of Sir Sutherland's appointment is being organised by LSE students. While it is believed to be impossible to make Sutherland stand aside from his post, a campaign asking for LSE to make a clear, renewed commitment to human rights and the new Environmental Policy, leading to the winning of improvements in the environmental and ethical standards of the LSE campus and buildings, is being arranged. Following this, it is hoped that the LSE can then be pressurised to cooperate with the student body and the LSE Students' Union (SU) in the detailing of more specific demands.

A meeting is going to be held next week to decide where to take the campaign. All people, from inside and outside the university, are welcome. At this meeting, the students hope to decide on the specific goals/demands of the campaign, the timetable of action and preparation for Michaelmas Term 2006 and Freshers' Fair 2006. Please email su.environment AT lse.ac.uk if you are interested in attending and a time will be found that is most suitable for all.

An online petition has also been set up - this can be found at http://www.petitiononline.com/lsesuth/petition.html. To put the most pressure on the LSE, individuals from inside and outside of the university, and supporters all over the world, are encouraged to sign.

The LSESU Green Party has been at the centre of the campaign, including writing press releases that have appeared in the LSESU Newspaper, The Beaver, and in London Student. Aled Dilwyn Fisher, LSESU Environment Ethics Officer, LSESU Green Party Secretary and campaign organiser said, "although the LSESU Greens have been heavily involved so far, we want this to be a campaign of the Students' Union and student body as whole, inclusive of a wide range of views and opinions. All people concerned about BP's record, whether Greens, LSE students and staff, or just people who value human rights and environmental stewardship, should join and air their views".
