Having been affiliated in October 2006 as a society at the University of Nottingham, Nottingham Young Greens’ first year has been a huge success.

The group ran a campaign against xenophobia, with an emphasis on tackling Islamophobia. The highlight of the campaign was an enlightening talk by Dr Chris Allen, a leading academic in the field, to a packed out lecture theatre.

In the light of government plans to upgrade Britain's nuclear weapons system, Trident, a campaign was run against Trident replacement. In addition to raising awareness through stalls, the Young Greens attended two blockades of Faslane nuclear base, resulting in a total of 6 arrests without prosecution. Two Nottingham YGs, Andy Birkby and Dan Casey cycled all the way to Faslane naval base (North of Glasgow) to take part in a student blockade with Students against Trident (STRIDENT), clocking up a total of 375 miles! After a fantastic evening of tea and origami, 1000 paper cranes (a potent anti-nuclear symbol of peace) and a huge petition collected on campus were sent to Tony Blair’s office in advance of the parliamentary vote.

As part of International Women’s Week, the group hosted a talk from London Assembly member and former Green Party Chair, Jenny Jones.A lively discussion of issues faced by women in politics and how we can encourage greater participation took place.

Members of the group have worked hard in elections and have achieved great success.Chloe Cheeseman was elected as Nottingham Uni’s first Green NUS delegate in November 2006 and was also elected onto the Students’ Union Exec as Environment and Social Justice Officer in summer 2007.The group stood an impressive 8 candidates in the May 2007 local elections and received a positive response from the electorate. Two Young Greens have also been elected onto the Environment and Social Justice Committee. They look forward to using their roles to bring about positive changes in the university.

On the social side, the Young Greens have had several wonderful events at the Broadway Cinema, Nottingham’s local, not-for-profit, arthouse cinema and have shared some wonderful meals at Squeak and Memsaab. There have also been socials to Lee Rosy’s tea room (hmmmmm tea), Crocus community café and Demo charity club night.

If that isn’t enough…. a green guide to ethical living for students in Nottingham and an international recipe book are on the way!
